Design students begin classes Aug. 24 under Iowa State University's first green roof
Iowa State University's first green roof atop the College
of Design's new King Pavilion already is hard at work,
reducing stormwater runoff, moderating the building's
temperature and converting carbon dioxide to oxygen. The roof
is one of several green components in the $6.6 million addition
that will provide much-needed instructional studio space for
design students beginning the first day of classes, Monday,
Aug. 24. The building will be dedicated the same day during a
ceremony in the college at 5:15 p.m. A reception and tours will
follow.

Pigskin parking tips for students, faculty, staff
For the fourth year, Cyclone fans will kick off Labor Day weekend with a football home opener at Jack Trice Stadium. The Cyclones take on North Dakota State at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3. ISU's Parking Division has instructions for students, faculty and staff so that everyone may park safely and legally before the game.

Federal Reserve Board's Hogarth is Hilton Chair
Jeanne Hogarth -- the program manager for the Consumer Education and Research Section of the Division of Consumer and Community Affairs at the Federal Reserve Board -- is ISU's 2009-2010 Dean Helen LeBaron Hilton Endowed Chair in Human Sciences. She'll deliver a free, public lecture at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22, in the Sun Room of ISU's Memorial Union.
Free comedy show with The Daily Show's Cenac is Friday
Comedy Central's Wyatt Cenac brings his stand-up show to Stephens Auditorium this Friday, Aug. 28, at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. and admission is free. The event is sponsored by the Student Union Board and the Committee on Lectures (funded by the Government of the Student Body).

A central Iowa wind farm may soon help power lights, appliances and other equipment in Ames and at Iowa State University.
Charges filed against Reinig
ISU Police and the Iowa Attorney General's Office have
charged Pamela Ann Reinig of Elkader with two felonies
following a state audit that found Reinig had deposited Iowa
State University funds into her personal bank account over a
period of years. Reinig is the former director of ISU's
Engineering Communications & Marketing department.

Iowa State University students have a new e-mail system powered by Google. The new system is called "CyMail," but it looks and feels like Google's Gmail.
Iowa State faculty attract $7.7 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grants
Iowa State University researchers have won 19 grants worth a total of $7.7 million that are supported by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The grants range from $2 million for a study of a bio-engineering technology that could produce biological hydrocarbons for biofuels to $600,000 for a study of cell membranes to $51,710 for a study of how the Ebola virus can inhibit a body's antiviral response.

U.S. News rankings: Iowa State remains among top 25 percent of public national universities
Iowa State University is among the top one-fourth of all public national universities in U.S. News & World Report's 2010 "America's Best Colleges" annual rankings. The rankings have Iowa State tied for 39th (up from 40th last year) among 164 best national public universities. And, for the eighth straight year, the magazine has included Iowa State's learning communities among its "Programs to Look For."
Prominent architect Bryce Pearsall to receive Christian Petersen Design Award
Bryce Pearsall, managing principal of DLR Group, will receive the College of Design's 2009 Christian Petersen Design Award at a ceremony Monday, Aug. 24.The Petersen award is given annually to alumni, staff and friends of the university for distinguished work that advances the design and art professions. Pearsall graduated from Iowa State in 1971 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree.
ISU mathematician part of research team to improve a plastic surgery procedure
Mathematics is playing a role in efforts by plastic surgeons to ensure success of live tissue transfers from one part of a person's body to another. And Anastasios Matzavinos, assistant professor of mathematics at Iowa State, is part of the research team that has shown how mathematics can take the guesswork out of such transfers.
Chief curator of New York City's Museum of Arts and Design will speak Aug. 24
David Revere McFadden, chief curator and vice president for programs and collections at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, will speak at the College of Design on Monday, Aug. 24. His lecture, "The Blur Zone: Art, Craft and Design Today," will be at 7:30 p.m. in Kocimski Auditorium, 101 Design. It is free and open to the public. McFadden curated the college's ongoing "30 and Beyond" alumni exhibition.
New Iowa State supercomputer, Cystorm, unleashes 28.16 trillion calculations per second
Cystorm, Iowa State University's second supercomputer, is capable of a peak performance of 28.16 trillion calculations per second. It will help Iowa State researchers advance their work in materials science, power systems and systems biology. It is also earning Iowa State recognition as a Sun Microsystems Center of Excellence in Engineering Informatics and Systems Biology.

three major cities found that one in four children between the

Iowa Lt. Gov. Patty Judge visited ISU's Reiman Gardens on
Aug. 11 -- a stop on what she called her "rock star"
tour of the state's hottest travel destinations.
Judge's "Travel Iowa '09" initiative is
designed to let Iowans know about fun, affordable tourism
attractions in the state. Reiman Gardens was named Iowa's
"Attraction of the Year" in 2008 by the Iowa Tourism
Office and the Travel Federation of Iowa.

Thousands of ISU students returning to Ames for class; others study from distance
While more than 27,000 students are heading to Ames this fall, more and more Iowa State students are finding that going to class is just one way to get their education.
Summer commencement is Aug. 8
An estimated 787 students will receive degrees from Iowa State at the conclusion of the summer term. A single commencement ceremony for all bachelor's, master's and doctoral candidates begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, in Hilton Coliseum. Iowa Lt. Gov. Patty Judge will address the graduating students. As announced in May, this will be Iowa State's final summer commencement ceremony. News release.

State fund advances swine vaccine research, six other Iowa State projects
The State Board of Regents has approved $679,663 in competitive
grants from the state's Grow Iowa Values Fund, a state
economic development program. The grants will support seven new
projects with the goal of developing technologies with
commercial potential and supporting the growth of companies
using those technologies.
