How you can help in the search for Jonathan Lacina

ISU students can participate in the search to find Jonathan Lacina in a variety of ways. More flyers need to be distributed off campus. Flyers are available to be picked up in the Dean of Students Office in the Student Services Building, starting at 2 p.m. on Feb. 2.

Post flyers

The flyer also can be downloaded here: http://www.news.iastate.edu/images/2010/jan/lacina.pdf.

Students are encouraged to post flyers in areas not already covered, such as gas stations, truck stops, rest areas, and along major thoroughfares in and out of Ames. Any places where those interested in online gaming might gather (video game stores, etc.) might also be applicable.

Network

In addition to poster distribution, students are encouraged to use their online networking communities, such as Facebook and MySpace, to spread awareness about the search for Lacina. Post the PDF on your profile page, send it to your friends and encourage them to do the same. Virtual posting has the ability to reach a large number of people in a relatively short amount of time.

Take precautions

While police have no evidence of foul play at this time, students also should be reminded of their own safety. Precautions include:

  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
  • Don't let strangers into your building, including anyone who may try to follow you into a residence hall or apartment. Guests should be hosted at all times.
  • Lock your doors.
  • Identify visitors through the peephole before opening the door.
  • Don't prop doors open or tamper with locks.
  • Don't give your access card or key to others. Immediately report lost or stolen access cards or keys.
  • Let trusted friends know your whereabouts and plans.
  • Be aware of where your friends are, especially when leaving group activities.
  • Exercise caution when online, including not posting personal information, whereabouts, travel plans, etc.
  • A DPS safety escort is available 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily by calling (515) 294-4444.
  • Contact ISU Police at (515) 294-4428 or 911 if you observe any suspicious activity.
