Newspaper columnist Rekha Basu to speak at Iowa State Sept. 26

AMES, Iowa - Des Moines Register columnist Rekha Basu will present the keynote address for the 35th anniversary of the women and gender studies program at Iowa State University on Monday, Sept. 26. Her talk, "How the Media Looks at Women," will be at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union Great Hall. It is free and open to the public.

A longtime columnist for the Des Moines newspaper, Basu writes about human rights, racial and gender issues and cultural trends. Her columns are syndicated by Gannett News Service.

Born in India to United Nations parents, Basu grew up internationally. She has worked as a reporter, editorial writer and columnist at newspapers in Iowa, New York and Florida. Basu's many awards include the 2008 Women of Influence Award, the Iowa Interfaith Alliance Award and the Iowa Farmers Union Media Award.

Basu earned a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University and a master's in political economy from Goddard Cambridge Graduate School.

Iowa State's Women's and Gender Studies Program will host a reception following Basu's talk. The lecture is cosponsored by the Women's and Gender Studies Program and the Committee on Lectures, which is funded by the Government of the Student Body.
