ISRAEL, PALESTINE FOCUS OF IOWA STATE SPEAKERS

AMES, Iowa – Israel and Palestine will be the focus of lectures by two upcoming speakers at Iowa State University.

Shlomo Gazit, senior research associate at Tel Aviv University, Israel, will speak on "Defense and Security Issues in Israel" on Sunday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. in the Gold Room of the Memorial Union.

Mark Ellis, professor of American and Jewish Studies at Baylor University, Waco, Texas, will speak on "Israel, Palestine and the Future of the Jewish People" on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 8 p.m. in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union.

Both lectures are free and open to the public.

Gazit, a retired Israeli major general, has worked for almost 40 years in the Israeli defense establishment. He was responsible for policy and administration in the Occupied Territories as the coordinator of Israeli Government Operations from 1967 to 1974; headed military intelligence for the Israeli Defense Forces from 1974 to 1979, and was a member of the Israeli delegation to the official peace negotiations with Egypt in 1977 to 1978. He is now a senior research associate at the Jaffe Center for Strategic Studies, Tel Aviv University. He is the author of two books on Israeli policy, "The Carrot and the Stick" and "Trapped Fools."

Prior to joining the Baylor faculty, Ellis founded and headed the Justice and Peace Studies Program at the Maryknoll School of Theology. He is the author of several books, including "Faithfulness in an Age of Holocaust," "Unholy Alliance: Religion and Atrocity in Our Time," and "Beyond Innocence and Redemption: Confronting the Holocaust and Israeli Power."
