GALLERY 181 TO HOST EXHIBITION OF ISU STUDENTS' ROME WORK

AMES, Iowa -- An exhibit showcasing the work of 50 Iowa State University students who participated in the College of Design's study program in Rome last summer and fall will be on display, Jan. 31-Feb. 15. The Rome Exhibition will be in Gallery 181, first floor, College of Design, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. It is free and open to the public.

The Rome Exhibition will feature drawing, painting, photography, mixed media and corporate identity and packaging design projects. It also will include proposals made by interior design students for contemporary retail uses of Trajan's Market, a nearly intact ruin of an ancient Roman marketplace currently serving as a museum.

The work was created by advanced undergraduate students in graphic design, interior design and studio arts under the guidance of Iowa State faculty members Roger Baer, associate professor and chair of the department of art and design; Arthur Croyle, associate professor of art and design; Brenda Jones, associate professor of art and design; and Cheri Ure, adjunct assistant professor of art and design. The students also studied with a number of resident instructors in Rome.

Faculty involved in the Rome Program consider the work produced this year to be of exceptional quality, said Baer.

"The work is very interesting this year and particularly innovative," said Ure. "Students really took advantage of the rich historical, cultural and aesthetic resources unique to Rome and Italy and produced work that incorporates the context and influences they were immersed in."

During their semester in Rome, the ISU students study many of the same concepts and topics as students who stay on campus, but their projects and assignments focus directly on experiences, activities or elements that are uniquely Italian, Croyle said.

"For example, graphic design students document historical letterforms, signs and symbols found in Italy by taking photos, making sketches and gathering samples that they then compile into posters or books," he said.

A closing reception for this exhibition will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 15, in the Lightfoot Forum, just outside the gallery. The public is invited to attend free of charge.
