ISU DESIGN STUDENTS WILL USE STEAMROLLER TO MAKE ART

AMES, Iowa -- This Friday, Oct. 24, Iowa State University art and design students will pave the way for a new form of expression: Steamroller art.

Students will use a road builder's steamroller to create large-scale prints on oversized woodblocks.

In their relief printmaking class, the students have carved designs on 4-foot-by-8-foot plywood blocks. On Friday, they will create prints from the woodblocks using the steamroller at Rueter's, a construction and equipment dealer at 5815 W. Lincoln Way. The printmaking session will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The students will lay the cut blocks on the ground and roll them with ink. A large sheet of paper will be laid over each block. The paper will then be covered with a canvas blanket. Another piece of wood will be placed atop the canvas. Students will drive the steamroller over their print blocks to create relief prints.

April Katz, assistant professor of art and design, teaches the course and oversees the project. In its third year, the project teaches students how to handle large-scale imagery and promotes collaboration and teamwork, Katz said.

"This year the students have really taken advantage of the large-scale format when developing the subject matter for their print blocks," she said.

"In their varied depictions of the city, landscape, human figure and modern-day myth, the students invite you to experience their perceptions of the world. The range of subjects chosen reflects the diversity within the College of Design and makes an appropriate addition to this year's celebration of our college's 25th anniversary," she said.

In addition to the five, 4-by-8 woodblocks created by Katz' students and members of the University Print Society, two senior printmaking students will make prints using their own 4-by-8 woodblock. The completed black-and-white prints will be displayed Nov. 17-21 in the College of Design's atrium, the Lyle E. Lightfoot Forum.
