OLIVER NAMED INTERIM ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR RESEARCH IN IOWA STATE'S COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES

AMES, Iowa -- David Oliver, professor of genetics, development and cell biology, has been named interim associate dean for Iowa State University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, effective Oct. 1.

A faculty member at Iowa State since 1996, Oliver is the former chair of the department of botany. From 1979 to 1996, Oliver was on the faculty at the University of Idaho, Moscow, where he was associate director of the Institute for Molecular and Agricultural Genetic Engineering from 1987 to 1988.

Oliver also has worked as an agricultural scientist at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, New Haven, Conn. He has served twice as a visiting professor, once from 1988 to 1989 in Grenoble, France, and again from 2000 to 2001 at Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia.

Oliver's primary research interests are plant biochemistry and molecular biology. His research focuses on how plants adapt to unfavorable environments, how plants synthesize lipids and how plants deal with toxic heavy metals in the environment.

As interim associate dean in the college, Oliver will direct research efforts. The college brings in approximately 30 percent of all external funding to Iowa State.

Oliver replaces Steve Rodermel, professor of genetics, development and cell biology, who has accepted a position as program director of the Integrative Biology and Neuroscience Section at the National Science Foundation. Rodermel begins his new position on a part-time basis Oct. 1 and full-time on Jan. 1, 2004. He will remain on the faculty at Iowa State.
