ISU HILTON CHAIR TO DISCUSS CRITICAL THINKING SEPT. 16

AMES -- Stephen Brookfield, Distinguished Professor in the School of Education at the University of St. Thomas, Minneapolis, Minn., will speak on "Hunting Assumptions: Exploring the Core of Critical Thinking," at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 16, in MacKay Hall, Iowa State University. The event is free and open to the public.

Brookfield is the 2003-2004 Dean Helen LeBaron Hilton Endowed Chair for the College of Family and Consumer Sciences at Iowa State.

Brookfield is an internationally recognized expert in critical thinking, adult education and teacher education. Critical thinking may be defined as thinking that is purposeful, reasoned and goal-directed and leads to effective problem solving and decision making skills.

Brookfield has a bachelor's degree in modern studies in history and politics from Coventry University, United Kingdom; a master's degree in theoretical sociology from the University of Reading, United Kingdom; and a doctor of philosophy (adult learning) from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom.

He has written and edited nine books on adult learning, teaching and critical thinking. Three books have won the World Award for Literature in Adult Education. In 2001, he earned the Leadership Award from the Association of Continuing Higher Education.

After 10 years as a professor of higher and adult education at Columbia University, New York, he joined the University of St. Thomas in 1991. In 2002, he was a visiting professor at Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass.

Brookfield's other fall semester visits to Iowa State are Wednesday, Oct. 15; Wednesday, Nov. 19; and Wednesday, Dec. 10. Brookfield also will work with graduate and undergraduate students during his visits.

Established in 1995, the Hilton Chair was endowed by a gift of more than $1.3 million from the estate of Helen LeBaron Hilton, who served as dean of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences from 1952 to1975.
