IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY'S K-12 PRINCIPAL PREPARATION GETS NOD FROM STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's program to prepare K-12 principals became the only "for-credit" educational administration program in Iowa to receive full approval by the state's education board Sept. 11.

The Iowa State Board of Education based its decision on a report by a national panel of experts that ranked Iowa State's program as a potential model for other institutions. The program, administered in the College of Education, was recognized for teaching and learning strategies for students, leadership and assessment curriculum, clinical experiences, course organization, and the development of an internship handbook.

The panel also recognized the program for its commitment to "maintain a critical core of faculty with expertise in the area of educational administration."

The consultant's report was triggered by revisions to Iowa's Standards for School Leaders approved in 2001 by state education officials. The state allowed two years for compliance.

"We are extremely pleased that the National Review Panel and State Board have validated the conceptual framework, core curriculum and academic rigor of our principal preparation program and faculty," said Don Hackmann, associate professor at Iowa State University and coordinator of the educational administrative program. "We look forward to continuing to deliver a high quality program throughout the state that prepares effective exemplary Iowa school leaders."

The Iowa Principal Leadership Academy, coordinated by the Northwest Iowa Area Education Agency Cooperative in partnership with the School Administrators of Iowa, also was approved by the Iowa Board of Education. It differs from Iowa State's program in that it does not offer college credit.
