Iowa's Poet Laureate

Mary Swander, a Distinguished Professor of English, was appointed Poet Laureate for Iowa in February 2009 by Gov. Chet Culver. Her two-year appointment allows her to travel the state for readings and appearances as Iowa's symbolic leader of poetry. She's also touring the country with "Farmscape" -- a Reader's Theatre play about the changing Iowa farmscape, written by some of her students -- while promoting her latest book, "The Girls on the Roof." The book-length narrative poem is about a mother and daughter stuck on the roof of a cafe along the Mississippi River for three days during the 1993 flood.
