ISU researcher develops program to teach students STEM while reading

Sara Nelson, a post-doctoral research associate at Iowa State, was looking at ways to more effectively teach young students new science and reading standards. So she developed a program where children in kindergarten through 3rd grade could spend their time reading and playing based around scientific concepts. It's a way to combine science, technology, engineering and math - or STEM - with literacy. The program starts with a book that focuses around a scientific theme. That book leads to a hands-on STEM experience so the kids can learn while playing.
