Two Iowa State colleges to host Career Day Feb. 23

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's colleges of Business and Liberal Arts and Sciences will host a Career Day from 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, in Hilton Coliseum, Iowa State Center. The event is free and open to the public. Free bus transportation is provided from campus.

Business college director of career services, Kathryn Wieland, said about 2,400 students attend Career Day to meet recruiters from more than 120 organizations and businesses.

"Students use the opportunity to learn about a variety of companies -- both in- and out-of-state -- and to explore internship, co-op or employment opportunities," Wieland said. "The recruiters may request a follow-up meeting with students during Interview Day on Thursday, Feb. 24. We offer convenient, private locations for interviews in the Gerdin Business Building and the Memorial Union."

Liberal Arts and Sciences director of career services Steve Kravinsky said Career Day allows all students to network and gain communication skills. He said students in the career development/planning phase of their schooling can use Career Day "as an excellent way to ask employers how their skills or majors may be used by their companies and in their industry."

"Employers hire students from both colleges equally," Kravinsky said. "I tell students to view this as a giant networking party. Where else can you go and meet 120 potential employers and learn what careers may be available to you?"

Wieland and Kravinsky said national companies such as Accenture, Ernst & Young, Caterpillar Inc. and Cerner Corp. will be at Career Day. Some of the Iowa-based firms will be Barr-Nunn Transportation Inc., Communications Data Services Inc., The Des Moines Register and Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Co.
