'Suspicious' backpack is not a threat; ISU Police investigation continues

AMES, Iowa -- An Iowa State University staff member called ISU Police at 7:23 this morning (Oct. 18) after discovering an unattended backpack in Room 152 of the Science I building. A note on the outside of the backpack made references to an explosion and to law enforcement.

ISU Police secured the area and restricted access to Science I while officers investigated the apparent threat. ISU Police officers, with assistance from the Office of the State Fire Marshal, examined the backpack. It was found not to contain any explosive or hazardous materials.

The building was reopened to the public just after 9:30 a.m.

Officers have identified the owner of the backpack. The case remains under investigation.
