Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines president, CEO to give Stafford Lecture Oct. 27

AMES, Iowa - Richard S. Swanson, president and CEO of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines, is the fall 2009 speaker for the Robert Stafford Lecture Series on Banking in Iowa State University's College of Business.

Swanson will discuss the housing sector and how changes in the market and system of housing finance can cause considerable implications for financial markets, community banks and homeowners. He'll also discuss causes and effects of the recent adjustments in housing finance, and examine key principles that will need to be considered for future housing finance structures.

The lecture will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27, in Room 0119 of the Gerdin Business Building. A 10 a.m. reception in the Cox Dean's Suite (Room 2200, Gerdin) will precede the lecture, which is free and open to the public,

Prior to joining the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines, Swanson served as chief executive officer and chairman of HomeStreet Bank, the largest privately held bank in the coastal Pacific Northwest.

Swanson previously served as a director of Triad Guaranty, a publicly traded mortgage insurance company; a director of Alaska Growth Capital, a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI); and was chair of the Tobacco Settlement Authority.

He has also served as an elected director and vice-chair of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Seattle; a member of the board of directors, the residential board of governors and the legislative steering committee of the Mortgage Bankers Association of America; a member of the Fannie Mae National Advisory Council; and as president of the Washington Mortgage Lenders Association.

Swanson was the 2002 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Mortgage Bankers Association of America.

The Robert Stafford Lecture Series on Banking was established by the College of Business in 2004 and is funded by Ames National Corp. in honor of its 100 years of service to the Ames community. The gift honors the late Robert Stafford, who was longtime president and chairman of First National Bank, Ames, and Ames National Corp.
