Iowa State students crisscross 'Tornado Alley,' chasing storms, sharing data, learning lessons
A new course this spring, "Field Observations of Thunderstorms," took 13 Iowa State students and their three instructors across "Tornado Alley" for eight days. They found storms, collected data and shared information with national forecasters. It all could have been straight out of the 1996 movie “Twister” or this summer’s sequel, “Twisters.”

Follow the little blue plow: Iowa State engineers help snowplow drivers stay on the road
The Iowa Department of Transportation is supporting Iowa State engineers as they work to develop, test and prove the concept of a snowplow navigation system. The system is designed to help snowplow drivers maintain their position in a lane. A second phase of the project will help snowplow drivers avoid collisions with snow-covered cars or debris in the roadway.

Iowa State is No. 1 in Iowa, No. 14 nationally in latest entrepreneurship rankings
Iowa State University is ranked No. 1 in Iowa, No. 6 in the Midwest and No. 14 nationally in the 2025 Top 50 Entrepreneurship Undergraduate rankings by The Princeton Review and Entrepreneur. The rankings consider more than 40 data points including academic offerings, mentorship and experiential learning opportunities.

Blues legends, rock rebels and stained glass: 50 years at Iowa State University’s Maintenance Shop
January 2024 marks 50 years of live music and events at the Maintenance Shop, the iconic club and performance space on the ground floor of Iowa State University’s Memorial Union. Music legends and beloved theatrical productions have performed in the orange glow of the M-Shop’s stained-glass window since the club opened its doors in 1974.

Nanoink, printing technologies could enable electronics repairs, production in space
Researchers tested new nanoink and printing technologies on the "roller coaster" of NASA microgravity flights. They demonstrated that electronic circuits can be printed in zero gravity. That could lead to astronauts printing electric circuits for spacecraft and equipment repairs. The technologies could also lead to manufacturing high-value electronics in the special environment of space.

Pausing biological clock could give boost to lab-produced blood stem cells
An Iowa State University research team has discovered when and why inflammatory signaling affects the formation of blood stem cells in embryos, which will benefit efforts to develop lab-grown, patient-derived stem cell transfusions to treat blood disorders. The promising advancement in regenerative medicine could eliminate the need for bone marrow transplants.

With deep roots and expanding collection, herbarium offers window into plant history
Iowa State’s Ada Hayden Herbarium – established in the university’s earliest days and built in part by contributions from some of its most celebrated scholars – expanded this fall when it absorbed the University of Northern Iowa’s collection. It now holds more than 700,000 preserved plant, fungal and algal specimens, a valuable resource for research and instruction.

Growing soybeans has a surprisingly significant emissions footprint, but it’s ripe for reduction
Over a typical two-year rotation of corn and soybeans, 40% of nitrous oxide emissions are in the fertilizer-free soybean year, according to new Iowa State University research. Winter cover crops and planting soybeans earlier could reduce emissions of the potent greenhouse gas by one-third while increasing yields.

Maidens return to Fountain of the Four Seasons
After more than 80 years in Iowa's extreme weather, the iconic maidens in Christian Petersen's Fountain of the Four Seasons sculpture were showing signs of erosion. For more than 18 months, the fountain was shut off while artists replicated the sculptures. In August, the maidens returned for many more generations of Iowa State students to enjoy.
