1-13-00 Contacts: Amy Bix, History, (515) 294-0122 Skip Derra, News Service, (515) 294-4917 FORMER NASA HISTORIAN WILL SPEAK ON HISTORY OF FLIGHT AMES, Iowa -- Deborah Douglas, an author and former NASA historian will give a talk on the evolution of flight, 8 p.m., Jan. 18, in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union at Iowa State University. The talk, "The End of 'Try and Fly:' The Origins and Evolution of American Aeronautical Engineering Education through WWII," is free and open to the public. Douglas is the author of "United States Women in Aviation, 1940-1985" and is curator of the MIT Museum. Douglas also currently is writing a history of federal contributions to the development of aeronautical engineering for NASA. Douglas has been a staff member at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.; a consultant to several organizations including National Geographic, the Smithsonian Institution, and USA Today; and has been an advisor for the American Experience documentaries produced by PBS/WGBH. Douglas's talk is the third in a series of four being held at Iowa State in celebration of the 20th anniversary of ISU's History of Science and Technology program, said Amy Bix, associate professor of history. - 30 - |
