DES MOINES ARCHITECT NAMED ISU CHAIR

AMES, Iowa -- Calvin F. Lewis, a principal with Herbert Lewis Kruse Blunck Architecture, Des Moines, has been appointed professor and chair of the Iowa State University College of Design department of architecture. The appointment was effective July 3.

Lewis began his architectural career at Charles Herbert and Associates in 1970, after earning a B.A. in architecture from Iowa State. He served as an adjunct professor of architecture at Iowa State in the mid-1980s. In 1983, Metropolitan Home magazine identified Lewis as one of the nation's top young architects.

He helped found Herbert Lewis Kruse Blunck Architecture in 1987. The firm recently was nominated for the National American Institute of Architects (AIA) Firm Award.

Lewis' projects have received more than 65 awards for design excellence, including two AIA Honors Awards for Interiors in 1997, and national awards from Time Magazine in 1983, Business Week/Architectural Record in 1998 and ID (International Design) Magazine in 1999. Lewis has been named an AIA Fellow, and several of his projects have been published in national architectural journals and books.

In 1999, Lewis received a National Award for Innovative Design and Excellence in Architecture from the AIA and the American Institute of Steel Construction for the Jacobson Athletic Offices and Training Facility. Lewis was a member of the ISU Cyclones football team while a student.
