ISU PROFESSOR HONORED FOR VITAMIN A RESEARCH

AMES, Iowa -- James Allen Olson, Distinguished Professor of biochemistry, biophysics and molecular biology at Iowa State University, has received the Conrad A. Elvehjem Award for Public Service in Nutrition from the American Society for Nutritional Sciences. The award was given to Olson in recognition of "distinguished service to the public through the science of nutrition."

Olson was cited for his work on vitamin A deficiencies, a major nutritional problem in children and pregnant women around the world. He also developed a model for estimating the amount of absorbed vitamin A required by healthy adults.

Olson helped establish a university research center of excellence in biochemistry and nutrition in Thailand and has played an important role in nutrition public policy. He has served on programs and committees of the National Institutes of Health, World Health Organization, National Academy of Sciences, International Agency for Research on Cancer and other nutritional health organizations.

The American Society for Nutritional Sciences is a research society of 3,500 members dedicated to improving the quality of life through research and education in animal and human nutrition and through communication of scientific knowledge to the public.
