PREMKUMAR NAMED TO UNION PACIFIC PROFESSORSHIP IN MIS AT ISU

AMES, Iowa – G. Premkumar, associate professor of Management Information Systems (MIS), has been named the Union Pacific Professor of MIS at Iowa State University.

The professorship was created in 1999 through a private gift from the Union Pacific Foundation, matched by Iowa State, to encourage leadership in information technology.

Michael Crum, professor and chair of the Logistics, Operations and Management Information Systems, said Union Pacific provided the seed money because the company recognizes the need and shortage of trained MIS faculty. A strong faculty base is necessary to producing quality graduates for industry. MIS is the largest major at Iowa State.

As part of the professorship, Premkumar will develop partnerships with Iowa businesses.

Premkumar is involved in the development of graduate and undergraduate MIS programs and serves as the chair of the college of business’ curriculum committee. He is currently creating a master of science program in information systems (MSIS) for students with strong technical and managerial skills.

In 1998, Premkumar was the recipient of the college’s Business Impact Award for organizing the corporate information systems certificate program offered by Iowa State at John Deere & Company. In 1999, Premkumar was a nominee for the Teaching Innovation Award from the college of business for creating an interactive network lab for MIS students. Students use the software to impact the working of the hardware.

He also teaches graduate courses in electronic commerce, telecommunications and networking. He is leading an e-learning initiative at ISU with a grant from Cargill, Inc., to incorporate computer-based tutorials (CBT) in classroom instruction. CBTs enable students to learn new concepts and software through web-based training.

The gifts from Cargill, Inc., and the Union Pacific Foundation were part of the ISU Foundation’s Campaign Destiny to Become the Best, which officially ends June 30.

Premkumar’s research interests include strategic information systems planning, telecommunications, electronic commerce, and adoption and diffusion of innovations. His research has been published in a number of journals including "Decision Sciences, Journal of MIS, and Information Systems Research." He came to ISU in 1989.
