SCIENCE LITERACY TOPIC OF PRESIDENTIAL LECTURES AT ISU

AMES, Iowa -- Jon Miller, an expert on scientific literacy, will give two presidential lectures at Iowa State University, April 6 and 7.

Miller, professor of journalism and director of the Center for Biomedical Communications at Northwestern University Medical School, Evanston Ill., will talk about the impact of public misunderstandings on important national policy issues, such as genetically modified organisms, nuclear power and environmental policies.

The first lecture, titled "Science Literacy and Biotechnology," will be at 7 p.m., April 6, in the Kocinski Auditorium, College of Design. The second lecture "Scientific Literacy and Environmental Policies," will be at noon, April 7, in the Gallery of the Memorial Union.

Both lectures are free and open to the public.

Miller's visit is part of the Lecture Series on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development, which is administered by International Institute of Theoretical and Applied Physics with support from Iowa State's Office of the President and several other departments and programs.
