VAN DE VELDE NAMED IOWA STATE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Bruce Van De Velde

AMES, Iowa -- Bruce Van De Velde, senior associate athletic director, University of Oklahoma, Norman, has been named Iowa State University director of intercollegiate athletics. Van De Velde's appointment, which is effective Nov. 15, was announced Wednesday, Nov. 1, by ISU interim president Richard Seagrave.

"Bruce Van De Velde's demonstrated leadership, impressive accomplishments and his enthusiasm for Iowa State University certainly convinced us that he is the right person to direct our athletic program," Seagrave said.

The director of intercollegiate athletics manages the university's intercollegiate athletics program, which includes nine men's sports and 11 women's sports.

Van De Velde has served as senior associate athletic director at the University of Oklahoma since 1999. He was director of athletics at Utah State University, Logan, from 1998 to 1999; associate athletic director for development at the University of Missouri, Columbia, from 1997 to 1998; associate athletic director for football at Kansas State University, Manhattan, from 1992 to 1997; assistant athletic director at Tulane University, New Orleans, from 1991 to 1992; and recruiting coordinator for the University of Iowa, Iowa City, from 1988 to 1991. He received a B.S. in physical education from Iowa State in 1981, and a M.A. in physical education from the University of Iowa in 1991.

At the University of Oklahoma, Van De Velde supervises several administrative positions, including the director of development, director of media relations and director of ticket operations. He also oversaw the reorganization of the Sooner Club fund-raising program, which increased annual contributions by 80 percent; directed the Campaign for Sooner Sports, a $75 million capital campaign to fund facility improvement and scholarship endowments; directed a marketing campaign for football season tickets that achieved a two-year increase of 30 percent; and implemented a new multi-media contract that generated $1.8 million in annual revenue.

At Utah State, Van De Velde developed a master plan for $10 million in renovations and expansion of Romney Football Stadium. He also accomplished the first phase of improvements, including the construction of 2,000 new seats, a $650,000 scoreboard and sound system; oversaw the final phases of fund-raising and construction of a $4.5 million indoor training center; and increased marketing and promotions revenues that generated more than $300,000 in annual funds.

At Missouri, as executive director of the Tiger Scholarship Fund, Van De Velde directed the Tiger Development Program and oversaw the capital campaign for a Sports Park at MU, a $50 million initiative for facility expansion and renovation. Under his supervision, fundraising reached all-time highs annual giving, total giving and scholarships. He also completed numerous building projects, including track and soccer stadiums, a softball complex, indoor practice facility, academic learning center and a sports medicine clinic.

He also has served on numerous Big 12 and National Collegiate Athletics Association committees.

Van De Velde succeeds Gene Smith, who left Iowa State in August to become athletic director at Arizona State University, Tempe. Elaine Hieber, senior associate athletics director and senior women's administrator, has served as interim director of athletics.
