ISU ANNOUNCES ATHLETIC DIRECTOR CANDIDATES

AMES, Iowa – Three candidates have been named for the director of intercollegiate athletics position at Iowa State University.

The candidates are Paul Griffin, director of intercollegiate athletics, University of South Florida, Tampa; David Martin, senior associate athletic director, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater; and Bruce Van De Velde, senior associate athletic director, University of Oklahoma, Norman. The three candidates tentatively are scheduled to make campus visits during the week of Oct. 16.

The director of intercollegiate athletics manages the university's intercollegiate athletics program, which includes nine men's sports and 11 women's sports. The new director will succeed Gene Smith, who left Iowa State in August to become athletic director at Arizona State University, Tempe. Elaine Hieber, senior associate athletics director and senior women's administrator, is serving as interim director of athletics.

Paul Griffin
Griffin has been director of intercollegiate activities at the University of South Florida since 1986. He was director of athletics at Jacksonville University, Florida, from 1981 to 1986, and director of athletics at Roanoke College, Salem, Va., from 1977 to 1981. He received a B.S. from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 1969, and a M.S. from Long Island University, New York, in 1972.

David Martin
Martin has been senior associate athletic director and chief operations officer at Oklahoma State University since 1999. He served as associate athletic director from 1983 to 1998. During this period, Martin served twice as interim athletic director at Oklahoma State. He also served as interim Big 12 conference commissioner in 1998. Martin received a B.S. from Iowa State in 1970.

Bruce Van De Velde
Van De Velde has served as senior associate athletic director at the University of Oklahoma since 1999. He was director of athletics at Utah State University, Logan, from 1998 to 1999; associate athletic director for development at the University of Missouri, Columbia, from 1997 to 1998; associate athletic director for football at Kansas State University, Manhattan, from 1992 to 1997; assistant athletic director at Tulane University, New Orleans, from 1991 to 1992; and recruiting coordinator for the University of Iowa, Iowa City, from 1988 to 1991. He received a B.S. from Iowa State in 1981, and a M.A. from the University of Iowa in 1991.
