CAREER CONFERENCES SET FOR OCTOBER AND APRIL

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's Program for Women in Science and Engineering has scheduled this coming year's career conferences, "Taking the Road Less Traveled."

The annual conferences -- which give female junior high and high school students a chance to explore non-traditional careers in math, science, engineering and technology -- will be held Oct. 5 and 12 for grades 6-9, and Oct. 17, for grades 9-12. The conferences will also be held April 5, 2001, for grades 9-12, and April 12 and 17, 2001, for grades 6-9.

"This is a great opportunity for young women," says PWSE conference coordinator Linda Dutton. "It exposes them to a variety of non-traditional career options and offers strategies for success."

Each conference includes women professionals in various science and technical fields who talk about their careers and encourage participants to reach for their potential. The conferences are extremely popular and organizers typically turn away hundreds of girls (the conference has a 650 student maximum).
