ISU TO JOIN ON-LINE EDUCATION INITIATIVE

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University is one of seven institutions that will offer professional development and enrichment courses online through Fathom.com, a new education web site.

ISU Extended and Continuing Education will oversee ISU web-based learning resources and the credit and non-credit registration processes on Fathom.com. ISU hopes to have programs offered through Fathom by Jan. 1, 2001, said Ann Hill Duin, associate provost and director of Extended and Continuing Education. Details regarding the specific programs that will be offered are still being worked out, she said.

Fathom is providing Iowa State University an opportunity to create a successful learning "marketspace," said Duin.

"We define the learning marketspace as an Internet gateway through which learners, employers, and learning providers are drawn together into a dynamic partnership that creates value for learners, enhances economic development, and engages institutions," said Duin.

Fathom is a center for online education programs from leading universities, libraries, museums and research institutes. Fathom offers public, high-quality digital media content in the form of lectures, articles, performances, and specialty Web sites. Fathom’s founding partners and owners include Columbia University, the London School of Economics and Political Science, Cambridge University Press, the British Library, the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, and The New York Public Library.

Other institutions participating in the Fathom initiative are the University of Washington Extension, University of Florida, State University of New York at Buffalo, Millard Fillmore College, University of Southern California Engineering Distance Education Network, and leading course developers FT Knowledge (providing courses from the University of Michigan and The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania) and OnlineLearning.net (providing courses from University of California – Los Angeles CLA Extension).
