PERUVIAN RURAL DEVELOPMENT EXPERT IS VISITING PROFESSOR

AMES, Iowa -- A rural sociologist from Peru is developing collaborative projects this fall as a visiting professor at The North Central Regional Center for Rural Development at Iowa State University.

María Fernández, of the National Agricultural University of Peru, La Molina, will design a rural development project for ISU and Grupo Yanapai, a nonprofit organization in Peru's Central Highlands.

During her six-week stay at ISU, Fernández also will co-write an article with Cornelia Flora, NCRCRD director, about the potentials of advocacy coalitions for rural development and community-based natural resource management.

For more than 10 years, Fernández has led multidisciplinary, inter-institutional teams that design and conduct participatory research on the household dynamics of farming communities. She has coordinated projects and conducted research for several international agencies, including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Fernández also worked on the re-orientation of agricultural extension curriculum and developed extension courses on stakeholder analysis and gender sensitivity with the International Agricultural Centre in the Netherlands.
