Harley Moon was honored for his pioneering work on E. coli bacteria in animals. Moon is the Frank K. Ramsey Endowed Chair in Veterinary Medicine and professor-in-charge of the Veterinary Medical Research Institute at Iowa State. He was inducted during a ceremony at the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington, D.C., Sept. 13. The USDA Agricultural Research Service Science Hall of Fame recognizes agency researchers for outstanding career achievements in agricultural science. Moon was the first scientist to describe a major pattern of E. coli lesions in the intestinal tract of animals. He described the mechanism by which these bacteria attach to the intestinal wall and produce disease. Moon joined USDA in 1968 as a research veterinarian at the National Animal Disease Center in Ames. He was the center's director from 1988 to 1995. Moon has received USDA awards for superior service and outstanding research leadership. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1991. -30- |
