STEWART NAMED INTERIM DIRECTOR OF ISU DPS

AMES, Iowa -- Jerry Stewart, associate director of the Iowa State University Department of Public Safety, has been named interim director of the department.

Stewart's appointment, which is effective Aug. 15, comes after the announcement that Loras Jaeger will step down from the director's position to become chief of the Ames Police Department.

Stewart has been associate director of DPS since 1990. Prior to that, Stewart served in several roles with the Cedar Falls Police Department, including police officer, investigator and patrol supervisor. He also taught for several years in public school systems in North Dakota and Waterloo.

"Loras Jaeger has provided excellent leadership during his years of service. The Iowa State University Department of Public Safety is one of the few accredited campus law enforcement programs in the country," said Warren Madden, vice president for business and finance. "I am pleased that Jerry Stewart, who has also played a major role in the department's success, is willing to take on these interim responsibilities. He has been intimately involved in the department's programs."

Stewart earned a B.S. in secondary education from Dickinson State University, North Dakota, in 1978, and an M.S. in criminal justice from the University of Alabama in 1996. He also is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

A national search for a director of public safety will be launched soon, said Madden.
