ISU FACULTY AND STUDENTS ARE HONORED AT ASAE MEETING

AMES, Iowa -- Several Iowa State University faculty members and students were given awards at the 2001 American Society of Agricultural Engineers Meeting.

Hongwei Xin, associate professor of agriculture and biosystems engineering, won the New Holland Outstanding Young Researcher Award. The award is given for the best research record influencing the livestock and poultry industry by a researcher less than 40 years old. Xin's research deals with improving housing design for poultry and livestock, and has provided economic benefits for the agricultural industry, animal welfare, agricultural workers, and associated industries. One concerned the improvement of in-transit conditions for transporting baby chicks.

Jeffery Lorimor, associate professor, agriculture and biosystems engineering; Charles Hurburgh, professor, agriculture and biosystems engineering; and Amy Millmier, graduate student, received a superior paper award for their paper, "Near-Infrared Sensing of Manure Nutrients."

David Bjorneberg, a recent ISU Ph.D. graduate won a superior paper award for, "Controlling Sprinkler Irrigation, Runoff, Erosion and Phosphorus Loss with Straw and Polyacrylamide."

The ASAE meeting was held July 29 Aug. 1.
