ISU VET MED COLLEGE APPOINTS ASSISTANT DEAN AND DEPARTMENT CHAIR

AMES, Iowa -- The Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine has appointed two faculty members to administrative positions for three-year terms.

James Roth, distinguished professor of veterinary microbiology and preventive medicine, has been named assistant dean for international programs.

Claire Andreasen, associate professor of veterinary pathology, has been named chair of the department of veterinary pathology and director of the veterinary clinical pathology laboratory.

Roth and Andreasen have held these positions on an interim basis since March 15 and April 1, respectively.

Roth joined Iowa State's faculty in 1977 and was named Clarence Hartley Covault Distinguished Professor in 1995. He researches in the area of immunology of infectious diseases of cattle and swine. Roth is the author of 110 research publications and one textbook.

Roth is executive director of the Institute for International Cooperation in Animal Biologics, which works to improve the availability, safety, effectiveness and use of veterinary vaccines throughout the world. In 1997, he won the Distinguished Veterinary Immunologist Award from the American Association of Veterinary Immunologists. Roth earned his D.V.M. degree in 1975 and his Ph.D. in 1981, both from Iowa State.

Andreasen joined the faculty in 1996. She previously was on the faculty at Oregon State University. Andreasen's research is in the area of granulocyte (a type of white blood cell) function.

She is the author of more than 45 research articles and 12 book chapters, and received the SmithKline Beecham (Pfizer) Award for Research Excellence in 1994.

Andreasen served on the executive board of the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology from 1996 to 2001 and was president in 2000. She earned her D.V.M. degree from Texas A&M University in 1982 and her Ph.D. in 1990 from the University of Georgia.
