IOWA STATE NAMES MURPHY TO WASHINGTON D.C. STAFF

AMES, Iowa – Jon Murphy has been named associate director of governmental relations at Iowa State University.

Murphy's appointment is effective Jan. 3. He will be based in Washington, D.C., and will serve as legislative liaison to the Iowa Congressional delegation and to federal agencies.

Murphy joins Iowa State from Iowa Congressman Leonard Boswell's office, where he served as legislative assistant to the congressman for key issues including agriculture, energy, trade and environment.

"We're pleased to have an individual with Jon’s skills and experience representing Iowa State University, the Board of Regents and the State of Iowa in Washington," said Gary Steinke, director of governmental relations. "It's critical that ISU's strengths and needs are communicated effectively at the federal level."

Murphy previously served three years as a legislative assistant in the Iowa Legislature. He is a Des Moines native and an ISU alumnus with a bachelor’s degree in political science.

"Jon has first-hand experience understanding the strengths and priorities of our state and the university, as well as solid working relationships with the entire Iowa Congressional delegation," Steinke said. "He will play a critical role in raising the profile of Iowa State University in Congress and among key federal agencies."

The Washington, D.C., office for Iowa State University will be located in the Fairchild Building, 499 South Capitol Street SW, Suite 406, Washington, D.C. 20003.
