REPAIRED IOWA STATE SCULPTURE TO BE REINSTALLED

AMES, Iowa — An Iowa State University Christian Petersen sculpture vandalized in September will be reinstalled on Monday, Jan. 22.

Petersen's "Marriage Ring" will be reinstalled in the foyer of MacKay Hall at approximately 9 a.m. Repair work on the vandalized sculpture (also known as "The Ring of Life" and "Wedding Ring") was done in the Nuclear Engineering Laboratory on campus. It will be moved from the laboratory at approximately 8:30 a.m.

The Petersen sculpture, which was a gift to the university from students in the class of 1941, depicts several children playing around a fountain. On Thursday, Sept. 14, the head of one of the children was removed and stolen. The head was found broken into several pieces on Sept. 19.

Francis Miller, with Conservation Technical Associates, Connecticut, began the repair work on the sculpture in early January. The highly specialized work, which cost more than $36,000, involved cleaning the entire sculpture, putting the broken head back together, reinstalling the head on the sculpture and repairing cracks. After the sculpture is returned to MacKay Hall, Miller will spend one or two days doing final detail work, including painting the filled areas between the cracks.
