ISU DEAN OF STUDENTS CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED

AMES, Iowa -- Three candidates have been announced for the dean of students at Iowa State University.

The candidates are Kathryn Cavins, assistant vice president for student services-student life, Western Illinois University, Macomb; Peter Englin, interim dean of students, Iowa State; and Todd Holcomb, director of residence life and new student programs, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio.

Each candidate will interview on campus on the following dates: Holcomb, Friday, July 27; Cavins, Tuesday, July 31; and Englin, Thursday, Aug. 2. Their interview schedules include a public forum from 10 to 10:45 a.m. in 210 Beardshear.

The dean of students is responsible for a variety of student academic and support services, and oversees such units as student activities, student government, tutoring services and recreation services. The dean of students also works closely with a variety of student groups, including Greek organizations, off-campus students and non-traditional students.

Cavins has been assistant vice president for student services-student life at Western Illinois since 1998. Prior to this, she held a variety of positions at Western Illinois, including director of residence life (1997-98); associate director of residence life (1995-97); assistant director of residence life and facilities-marketing, orientation and retention (1992-95); and complex director (1990-92). She received a B.A. in sociology (1986) and an M.S. in college student personnel (1989), both from Western Illinois. She is completing work on a Ph.D. in educational administration and foundations at Illinois State University, Normal.

Englin has been interim dean of students at Iowa State since July 2000. He has served as associate dean of students since 1999. Englin has held several other positions at Iowa State, including coordinator of residence life (1991-99) and residence marketing and conference coordinator (1989-91). He also served as assistant director for conference housing and residence hall services at North Dakota State University, Fargo. Englin earned a B.S. in zoology (1982) and an M.A. in counseling and guidance (1987), both from North Dakota State. He is completing work on a Ph.D. in hotel, restaurant, institution management and family consumer science education at Iowa State.

Holcomb has been director of residence life and new student programs at Miami University since 1997. Prior to this he was associate director of residence life and new student programs at Miami University (1994-97). He also was residence life coordinator at the University of Georgia, Athens, (1987-1990) and a residence hall director at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, (1984-87). He received a B.S. in psychology from Truman State University, Kirksville, Mo. (1984); an M.Ed. in higher education administration from Texas Tech (1987); and a Ed.D. from the University of Georgia (1992).

Iowa State's former dean of students, Kathleen MacKay, stepped down from the position in July 2000. She is now dean of student affairs at Elmhurst College, Illinois.
