ISU'S TEAM PRISUM COMPLETES FIRST DAY OF SOLAR CAR RACE
AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's solar car team, Team PrISUm, completed the first day of racing by making it from Chicago to Springfield, Ill., a distance of about 205 miles on the first day of the American Solar Challenge.

Thirty teams began the race Sunday morning (July 15) from the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago. Iowa State was the 19th car to start on the race route.

The American Solar Challenge, a 2,300-mile July 15-25 race, is the longest solar car race ever attempted. The race course will follow portions of old Route 66.

"We feel like we did pretty well for our first day of racing," said Nick Mohr, director of Team PrISUm. "We are planning on working on some of the minor glitches we encountered with the Odyssey car and getting an early start on tomorrow's leg of the race."

Teams racing in the ASC have two mandatory overnight stops. The first one is in Rolla, Mo., on Monday evening, July 16. The Iowa State team's current position puts it about half way to Rolla.

Each team is fitted with a tracking unit. To view where teams are on the race route go to ASC tracking.

The American Solar Challenge is designed to advance renewable energy and electric vehicle technologies, promote educational and engineering excellence, encourage environmental consciousness and teach teamwork. This is the sixth major solar car race Iowa State students have participated in since 1990.
