BURGER RETIRES; FOOD PLAN REMAINS ON TRACK

AMES, Iowa – Planning for a single campus dining service at Iowa State will continue, despite the retirement of the dining service director.

Stewart Burger has announced that he will retire effective March 17. Burger was named director of the new dining service in June 2000 after serving as director of the residence department dining service since 1983. He has been at Iowa State since 1970 when he began working as a graduate student in the residence department.

"This has been a very rewarding career for me. I have enjoyed working with so many people and at a lot of special events at Iowa State, but I am looking forward to retirement," Burger said.

"Stewart Burger's experience and leadership will be missed as we implement our new dining service. He's done an outstanding job in providing superior food service for the entire university community," said Tom Hill, vice president for student affairs.

Hill said work on implementing the new dining service continues to be a priority, but the project has moved slower than expected because of complexities in merging two different food service financial systems. Implementation of the single dining service will take place July 1, 2002, Hill said. A search will be conducted to select a new food services director.

A consultant last year recommended merging the food services provided by the residence department and the Memorial Union. One advantage of the single service will be more flexibility and variety for students, faculty and staff.
