FORMER SEC OFFICIAL IS BACON CENTER LECTURE SPEAKER

AMES, Iowa – William McLucas, a former director of the Security and Exchange Commission's (SEC) Division of Enforcement and now a co-chair of the Securities Practice Group of the Washington, D.C., law firm of Wilmer, Cutler and Pickering, is the featured speaker for the Bacon Lecture in Business Ethics Series at Iowa State University.

The Bacon lecture will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 26, in Room 205 of Carver Hall. McLucas will address ethical issues in stock transactions. The Murray G. Bacon Center for Ethics in Business, part of Iowa State's College of Business, is the event's sponsor.

McLucas' practice focuses on securities enforcement, regulation and litigation matters. He joined the law firm in June 1998, after 21 years of SEC service. His tenure as director of the SEC was the longest in the commission's history. While with the SEC, he earned the National Public Service Award, the Tom C. Clark Outstanding Lawyer Award and the President's Award for Distinguished Executive Service. In 1997, he was named as one of National Law Journal's "One Hundred Most Influential Attorneys in America."

"Insider stock transactions with corporate officers selling stock before the release of negative news is becoming increasingly common," said James Werbel, co-director of the Murray G. Bacon Center for Ethics in Business. "McLucas is one of the top U.S. experts on issues associated with illegal insider stock transactions. We are fortunate to have him come to Iowa State."

The Murray G. Bacon Center for Ethics in Business was created in 1993. The center's mission is to help Iowa State students and Iowa firms understand ethical dilemmas in the business world. It is a joint effort of the College of Business, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the department of philosophy.
