VET MED DEAN CANDIDATE TO VISIT CAMPUS

AMES, Iowa – Dr. Anthony Wayne Confer, a candidate for the dean of Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, will visit the Iowa State campus on March 27-29.

Confer is associate dean of research and graduate education at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater. Confer also is professor of veterinary pathology and holder of an endowed chair in food animal research.

Confer will have an open forum on Wednesday, March 28, at 8 a.m. in 2226 Veterinary Medicine. He will speak on "An Agenda for the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine: A Personal View of the Way Forward." A question and answer period will follow his presentation.

Confer has been at Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine since 1981. He was associate professor of veterinary pathology from 1981 to 1985; professor of veterinary pathology from 1985 to present; chair of the department of veterinary pathology from 1986 to 1996; chair of the department of anatomy, pathology and pharmacology from 1996 to 1999; holder of the Sitlington Chair for Food Animal Research from 1995 to present; and associate dean for research and graduate education from 1999 to present.

Confer's research has focused primarily on livestock diseases.

He received two degrees from Oklahoma State: a B.S. in biological sciences in 1971; a D.V.M. in 1972. He received an M.S. in veterinary pathology from Ohio State University in 1974. He received a Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1978.

Richard Ross served as dean of veterinary medicine from 1993 to July 2000, when he was named dean of the College of Agriculture. Norman Cheville, professor and former chair of veterinary pathology, is interim dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine.
