TWO IOWA STATE STUDENTS NAMED UDALL SCHOLARS

AMES, Iowa -- Two Iowa State University students have been named 2001 Morris K. Udall Scholars.

Mark T. Nolen, an animal ecology major from Little Rock, Ark., and Jesse D. Holland, a liberal arts and sciences major from Boone, each will receive a one-year scholarship to cover tuition, fees, books and room and board up to a maximum of $5,000. Udall Scholars are nominated by universities and selected on the basis of academic merit and demonstrated commitment to fields related to the environment.

Nolen plans to be a research biologist studying ecological patterns, with an emphasis on avian conservation and ecology. Holland expects to pursue a master's degree and then work in the private sector for an environmental advocacy organization.

"Iowa State University is pleased to have two students selected for Udall Scholarships. This recognition attests to the high quality of education for students in the environmental sciences, and the high caliber of students who are prepared for public service," said Liz Beck, director of the ISU Honors Program.

The Morris K. Udall Foundation selected 80 2001 scholars from more than 500 applicants.

The U.S. Congress established the Morris K. Udall Foundation in 1992 to honor the late U.S. Representative's legacy of public service.
