MILITARY, INTELLIGENCE ROLES IN TERRORISM FIGHT
DISCUSSED AT ISU


AMES, Iowa -- The roles of the military and intelligence communities in the war against terrorism will discussed by two upcoming speakers at Iowa State University.

Retired Lt. Col. Piers M. Wood will speak on "The Military Role in the War on Terrorism" on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at 8 p.m. in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union. Wood was chief of staff at the Center for Defense Information, an organization that researches trends and developments in U.S. and international defense policies and strategies.

Last year, Wood started Military Insights, a national military research organization. Wood served 28 years in military service, earning the Silver Star and two Bronze Stars with the combat V. His assignments included serving as an assistant professor of history at West Point and as an aide-de-camp to a four-star Army Group Commander in NATO.

Jim Olson, senior lecturer and the Central Intelligence Agency officer in residence at the Bush School of Government and Public Service in College Station, Texas, will speak on "The Role of Intelligence in Counterterrorism" on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 8 p.m. in the Sun Room. Olson joined the CIA in 1969 and served for 31 years, mostly overseas in clandestine operations. He was deputy chief of station in Moscow and chief of station in Vienna and Mexico City. He also served as chief of counterintelligence at CIA headquarters in Langley, Va.

Wood and Olson are part of Iowa State's "2001 Institute on World Affairs: What is Terrorism?" lecture series. Both talks are free and open to the public.
