ISU PROFESSOR HONORED BY CIVIL ENGINEERS

AMES, Iowa -- Max Porter, an Iowa State professor of civil and construction engineering, has been elected an honorary member to the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). It is the highest recognition bestowed on ASCE's members.

"I'm deeply honored with this recognition," Porter said. "ASCE has been around for 150 years and only 471 people have been recognized in this way. I feel privileged to be in this select group."

Porter has been active in ASCE through the years, serving on its board of governors and as a Fellow of the society. Porter currently is the president of ASCE's Structural Engineering Institute, which sent teams of structural engineers to the World Trade Center and the Pentagon to help determine how those buildings withstood the attacks on September 11.

According to the ASCE, Porter is one of the "foremost experts in steel deck composite slabs and in masonry and composite structures. [He] has carried out research that has contributed significantly to engineering codes and standards."

Porter was one of 13 new ASCE Honorary Members installed in October during ASCE's annual meeting in Houston.
