IOWA STATE'S SPEKTOR NAMED FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR

AMES, Iowa -- Tatiana Spektor, assistant professor of foreign languages and literatures at Iowa State University, has been named a Fulbright Scholar for the 2002 spring semester.

Spektor, a faculty member at Iowa State since 1997, has been awarded a Fulbright research and lecturing award. She will spend the spring term at Moscow State Pedagogical University teaching a seminar on Russian literature and working on a biography and literary study of the Russian writer Yuri Trifonov (1925-81).

"Trifonov is one of the finest Russian novelists and short-fiction writers, extensively published in the Soviet Union and widely translated in Europe and the U.S.," said Spektor. "The prose of Trifonov, the best-known Soviet writer after Solzhenitsyn, has also received substantial scholarly attention both within Russia and abroad."

Iowa State's department of foreign languages and literatures also is hosting a Russian Fulbright Scholar, Svetlana Piskunova, a faculty member at Moscow State Lomonosov University.

While at Iowa State, Piskunova is teaching two Russian and Spanish literature courses and researching the Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes, best known for "Don Quixote."
