GRANT LAUNCHES NEWSPAPER IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM AT ISU

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication has received a $12,000 grant from the Knight Foundation for a Newspaper in Residence Program.

The program will bring five professional journalists from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram to the Iowa State campus during the 2001-02 academic. Greenlee was one of 10 journalism schools awarded a Knight Foundation grant. The program will give students and faculty the opportunity to meet and work with professionals who are experts in the various disciplines of journalism.

Jill (J.R.) Labbe, senior editorial writer and columnist for the Star-Telegram, will be the will be at Iowa State from Sept. 28 to Oct. 4. She will meet with the Iowa State Daily and Ethos Magazine students, journalism classes and Iowa journalists. Labbe is an expert in First Amendment, freedom of information and ethical issues. She also will do a workshop for the Iowa Newspaper Association on editorial and column writing.

Gene (Zip) Zipperlen, Star-Telegram senior copy desk chief for 10 years, and Matt Pinkney, Star-Telegram executive design director for features and graphics departments, will be on campus Nov. 2-8. Javier Aldape, vice president and publisher of the Star-Telegram's Spanish language newspaper, La Estrella, will be on campus in February 2002. Jeff Claassen is a Star-Telegram computer-assisted reporting specialist, will be at the Greenlee School during the first week of March.
