ALLEN TO SERVE AS ISU PROVOST DURING SEARCH

AMES, Iowa -- Benjamin Allen, interim vice president for external affairs at Iowa State University, will serve as Iowa State provost while a search for a new provost is conducted.

The appointment was announced today (Thursday, April 4) by Gregory Geoffroy, Iowa State president.

"I am delighted that Ben Allen has agreed to serve in this capacity," Geoffroy said. "This is a very important position, and Ben Allen has the leadership skills and experience we need to provide continuity in the provost's office. He is also highly respected by our deans, faculty and staff as well as friends of the university."

Provost Rollin Richmond has been named president of Humboldt State University in California. He is expected to begin his new duties early this summer.

A national search for a permanent provost will begin soon. The goal is to have a new provost on campus by early 2003.

"As a former dean and faculty member, I know about the important responsibilities of the provost. I'm also familiar with the issues dealt with in the provost's office, and their importance to our colleges and other academic units of Iowa State," Allen said.

Allen was appointed interim vice president of external affairs in 2001. He had served as dean of the College of Business since 1995. His academic career includes two associations with Iowa State. From 1979 to 1990, he served in a number of positions in the college, including professor and chair of the department of transportation and logistics. He was named a Distinguished Professor of Business in 1988. He left Iowa State for a position at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, in 1990. Allen returned to Iowa State in 1991.

Allen received a B.S. (1969) in business economics from Indiana University, Bloomington, and an M.A. (1973) and a Ph.D. (1974) in economics, from the University of Illinois.

In January, Geoffroy announced that the position of vice president for external affairs will go unfilled because of budget constraints.
