ISU WINS MIDWEST REGIONAL CONCRETE CANOE COMPETITION

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) won the Midwest Regional Concrete Canoe Competition last weekend and now will begin preparing for the national competition in June.

Iowa State's team, racing its canoe, "Fever," took the regional competition at Platteville, Wis., April 12-13. The competition is a mix of technical presentations and five races, including men's and women's sprints and endurance/slalom races. The races account for about 40 percent of a team's overall score. Five teams competed in Platteville.

"The competition was really close. We won by two points," said Jessica Slavik, co-chair of ISU's team. "We came in first with our display, second with the technical paper and we finished third in most of the races. We are going to practice our canoeing techniques for the finals," she added.

"Fever" measures 19.2 feet long and weighs only 120 pounds. It uses lightweight aggregates that allow the craft to float in water without the need of additional flotation devices in its hull, Slavik said.

The regional competition is one of 20 such competitions that define the field for the 2002 National Concrete Canoe Competition, which will be held June 20-24 at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. The competition is an annual event.
