CYCLONE ATHLETIC GREATS TO BE INDUCTED INTO ISU HALL OF FAME AT SEPT. 6 BANQUET

AMES, Iowa -- The Iowa State Letterwinners Club Hall of Fame Committee will honor 2002 ISU Hall of Fame inductees on Sept. 6. The ceremony will be held at The Hotel at Gateway Center. Social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m., with dinner following at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 per person, and can be obtained by contacting Diane Shearer of the Iowa State Letterwinner's Club at (515) 294-5022.

This year's inductees will include:

Dick Barker -- Iowa State's first football All-American (1919) also was the first Cyclone to play in the NFL. Barker helped plan the first NCAA Wrestling Championship in 1928 and started wrestling programs as coach at Cornell and Michigan.

Bill Cain -- Finishing his ISU men's basketball career (1968-70) with 19.5 ppg. average, Cain was a two-time conference rebounding champion and two-time first-team all-Big Eight selection.

Carol Cook -- A Big Eight women's cross country champion in 1976, Cook finished second at the 1976 Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women National Championship (AIAW), helping ISU claim conference and national team titles.

Diane Doles -- A two-time first-team all-Big Eight volleyball player, Doles was ISU's female athlete of the year in 1983 and a 1983 Big Eight medal of honor recipient.

Jim Gibbons -- A 1981 NCAA 134-pound wrestling champion, Gibbons coached Iowa State to the 1987 NCAA team title.

Keith Krepfle -- A tight end who tallied 94 career receptions for ISU football team from 1971-73, Krefpfle played in the Sun and Liberty Bowls. He also played seven seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and one season with the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL.

Mal Schmidt -- A six time letterman in football and swimming, Schmidt was an All-American swimmer as a senior and ISU athlete of the year in 1951. He returned to Iowa State in 1965 as an administrator.

Brent Simmons -- The winner of three Big Eight titles in gymnastics in 1970 was on two Big Eight Conference championship teams (1970-71), on the NCAA championship team (1971), and a four-event All-American (1971).

Sunday Uti -- Only the third Iowa State student-athlete to compete in three different Olympic Games, Uti finished second in the 400 meters at the 1983 indoor and outdoor NCAA track championships and the 1984 NCAA indoor and 1985 NCAA outdoor meets.

Tom Watkins -- The second member of Iowa State's 1959 "Dirty Thirty" to enter ISU Hall of Fame, Watkins was first-team all-Big Eight and All-American at running back in 1960. He played seven seasons in the NFL.
