IOWA STATE ACCOUNTING PROFESSOR TO SERVE ON SEC'S DIVISION OF CORPORATE FINANCE

Ames, Iowa -- An Iowa State University accounting professor has been named as an Academic Accounting Fellow in the Division of Corporation Finance of the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C. The appointment is for one year.

David Smith, Union Pacific Corporation/Charles B. Handy Professor of Accounting in the College of Business, began his duties Aug. 1. He will serve as a research resource and interpret research materials for the agency's staff.

"I have been told that I will be assigned to a variety of projects at the SEC, including researching financial reporting issues, reviewing filings and consulting on accounting and reporting matters," Smith said. "I think the year will provide me with great experiences that I can bring into the classroom when I return to ISU."

Smith came to Iowa State in 1998 from the University of Dayton in Ohio where he was a professor of accounting. He served as chair of the accounting department from 1998 to 2001. During his tenure as department chair, a master's of accounting program was created and the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business accredited the department, both firsts for the program.

Smith received a B.A. in economics from Carleton College, Northfield, Minn., and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and Ph.D. in accounting from the University of Illinois, Champaign/Urbana.

Established in 1984, the College of Business is the third largest college at Iowa Sate with a fall 2001 enrollment of more than 4,000 students. The college is expected to move into its new home, the Gerdin Business Building, in fall 2003. The building project was launched with a $10 million gift from Russ and Ann Gerdin of Coralville.
