LEADING PLANT SCIENTIST TO SPEAK AT IOWA STATE

AMES, Iowa -- One of the plant scientists responsible for sequencing the Arabidopsis genome will present the 20th Walter E. Loomis Lecture at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 28, in the Memorial Union Gallery Room on the Iowa State University campus. "From Agriculture to Genomics: A Personal Odyssey," will be presented by Athanasios Theologis, senior scientist, USDA Plant Gene Expression Center, Albany, Calif., and adjunct professor, University of California, Berkeley.

Theologis' research is at the forefront of physiological, biochemical and molecular genetic efforts to understand fundamental mechanisms controlling plant hormone biosynthesis and response. Theologis and colleagues contributed the sequence of Chromosome 1 to the completed international effort of the Arabidopsis Genome Initiative.

Theologis' presentation is part of the 2002 Interdepartmental Plant Physiology Major Mini-symposium, which will be 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, March 1, in the Pioneer Room, Memorial Union. Seminars on plant hormone perception and signaling will be presented by Theologis and Harry Klee, horticultural sciences department, University of Florida; Julian Schroeder, biology division, University of California, San Diego; and Neil Olszewski, plant biology department, University of Minnesota.
