FRESHMEN DESIGN STUDENTS GET CREATIVE AT COMPETITION

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University students will give their creative juices a workout at an upcoming College of Design competition.

Design's first Freshmen Creativity Competition and Exhibition will be held Jan. 16-23 in the college's atrium. Five cash prizes, ranging from $50 to $1,000, will be awarded.

The competition's opening ceremony is Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m. Bill Boon, professor emeritus, will be grand marshal and give a seminar on creativity.

More than 130 teams of freshman students will be challenged to create a new image for the Ames power plant. The competition is based on a professional competition that will be held in Ames in the spring. The student competition is expected to fill the College of Design atrium with drawings, posters, models, paintings, sculptures and video and computer animation presentations. The student projects will be judged on their creativity. Each team will be assigned an upperclassman adviser who will coach them in their work.

The teams will have until Saturday, Jan. 19, to create and display their projects. Judging will take place Saturday, with winners announced at a noon event Sunday, Jan. 20. The exhibits will remain on display through Wednesday, Jan. 23.

The teams will be formed at the opening event and will consist of students from various disciplines in the College of Design.

"The project's aim is to impress on design students early on the importance of getting work into exhibitions and competition," said Genevieve Borich, a senior in community and regional planning who is coordinating event. "We also want to teach students the skills needed to present work professionally in an inter-disciplinary group environment."
