MILLER NAMED CHAIR OF IOWA STATE CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT

AMES, Iowa -- Gordon Miller, professor of chemistry, has been named chair of the department of chemistry at Iowa State University, effective August 1.

An Iowa State faculty member since 1990, Miller succeeds Patricia Thiel, distinguished professor of chemistry, who completed a three-year term as chair.

A former research scientist with the Max-Planck-Institut, Stuttgart, Germany, Miller also is affiliated with the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory at Iowa State. He has been a visiting professor at ETH, Zurich, Switzerland. He received an Exxon Faculty Fellowship in solid-state chemistry in 1995.

Miller's research focuses on development of new inorganic materials that show interesting chemical and physical properties. His group is currently studying complex intermetallic compounds and working to understand the relationships among the materials' composition, structure and properties. The materials are being explored for use as quasicrystals and in magnetic refrigeration.

Miller earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Rochester, and a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Chicago.
