ISU DESIGN ASSOCIATE DEAN AWARDED NCARB PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL

Ames, Iowa -- Kate Schwennsen, associate dean of Iowa State University's College of Design, was awarded the Presidential Medal for Distinguished Service by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) during its annual conference in June.

The award recognizes individuals who dedicate a large part of their careers, energy and wisdom to benefit the work of NCARB, the public and the architectural profession.

Schwennsen has chaired NCARBs Committee on Education and Certification Task Force, and served on the Procedures and Documents Committee. She also represented NCARB on the National Architectural Accrediting Board Validation Conference Task Force. She recently completed her third consecutive term as an appointed member of the Iowa Board of Architectural Examiners.

Schwennsen also serves on the American Institute of Architects (AIA) board of directors. She recently was invested in the AIA College of Fellows and elected vice president of the national AIA for 2003.

Schwennsen earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees in architecture from Iowa State. Her professional experience includes tenures with Des Moines-based Bloodgood Architects and Planners, and Engelbrecht and Griffin Architects, PC. She was the first female architect to preside over AIA Iowa, a position she held in 1997-1998.
