IOWA STATE TO BREAK GROUND
FOR EXTENSION 4-H YOUTH BUILDING

AMES, Iowa - One 4-H member from every county in Iowa will participate in a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Extension and 4-H Youth Development Building at Iowa State University on Thursday, June 27.

The ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. north of the Administrative Services Building on the Iowa State campus. Several people will make brief comments, including ISU President Gregory Geoffroy and Ashley Glade, an ISU student and Iowa 4-H Foundation board member. The event is free and open to the public.

"The Extension 4-H Youth Building will make a positive, welcoming statement to Iowa youth and provide 'one stop' access to ISU Extension," said Geoffroy.

The building will house ISU Extension's 4-H youth program office. Nearly 135,000 K-12 youth are enrolled in ISU Extension 4-H youth development programs. It also will house the educational materials and marketing services division of Continuing Education and Communication Services.

The Extension 4-H Building will connect Iowa youth and adults with ISU academic departments, conferences and credit and noncredit learning opportunities, and will help potential students discover career opportunities, said Stanley Johnson, vice provost for extension.

"Iowa's youth, their parents and families need a place on campus to learn about Iowa State's educational resources. They'll have that place in the building's 'WOW' Center," Johnson said.

"WOW" stands for "Why Opportunity Works." The center will feature interactive exhibits designed to interest youth in science, technology and other fields of study.

The 22,900-square-foot, $4.7 million building is scheduled to be completed in summer 2003. The building will be paid for with private gifts given to Iowa State through the ISU Foundation, including a $1 million gift from the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation.

The Administrative Services Building is located on the north side of campus on the west side of Stange Road. Guests may park in lot 20, south of the Administrative Services Building.
